Why Scentsorter?
The other day I was hanging out in the backyard of a local bar with my buddy, Jay Stuart. The New York City sun was melting away the last white signs of winter and I was casually listening as he explained that there's a reason for every fragrance I've ever liked. He caught my attention when he explained the concepts of notes and accords.
As it turns out, scents are like music or paintings. I've been a musician, artist and craftsperson my whole life and yet I have never thought of my nose as being as useful for artistic expression as my eyes, ears or hands.
It made perfect sense. I mean, this is what a chef does, right? A note is like an ingredient- treated with the laws of phyisics to create unique taste and texture sensations- tantalizing the nose and mouth.
We create fundamental building blocks to explain abstract concepts for cookign ingredients, and fragrances are no different. It suddenly seemed so obvious.
In this age of shortform everything and the scourge of AI communications in lieu of honest, human shortcomings, something major is lost. Breadth and depth cannot exist together in a day with finite hours. Like Mary Oliver writes about attention, it is "the beginning of devotion."
Thus, I created the scentsorter project to bring your attention to the artistry of fragrance- told by those who live it and breathe it. (pun intended)
